hey, i am dan
I break software on purpose so it doesn't break by accident. After hours I run a server rack in my house and build factories I never quite finish.
Terminal: whoami, dan gutwald, sdet. make test: 5 passed, 1 flaky (drone landings). Focus: playwright, UI and API testing, CI/CD. /played: World of Warcraft, integer overflow; Satisfactory, 2,271 hours; No Man's Sky, 1,431 hours.
What I do for a living
Software Development Engineer in Test
I build the test automation for an Angular app: UI and API suites in Playwright, built on custom fixtures and page objects, plus some load testing with Artillery. I'd rather a test catch it than a customer.
The homelab is where I practice the same habits on my own systems: automate it, monitor it, write it down.

Toolbox
Things I spend too much time on
The homelab
An old enterprise server, a pile of containers, a NAS, and a UPS that's the only thing standing between me and a very bad day. Media, cloud storage, game servers: if I can host it myself, I probably am.
Dungeon master
Running a homebrew 5e campaign for my friends on a self-hosted virtual tabletop. No regrets.
3D printing
Bambu X1-Carbon with 8 filament slots. Mostly rack gear and enclosures, like a custom case for the Pi that rips my Blu-rays.
RC & FPV
A Tinyhawk II for flying indoors, and an Arrma Gorgon monster truck, currently waiting on a new pinion gear.
Gaming
Plus Factorio and Dyson Sphere Program. An SDET who automates for fun? Shocking, I know.
Run like production, just smaller
On the workbench
Stockpile
A small, single-binary web UI for LanCache with prefill scheduling and a "Doctor" page that catches the usual gotchas. Go + SQLite.
The campaign
A homebrew 5e campaign world for my friends. No spoilers.
Claude Watcher
A spare Pi that runs a morning health check on the lab and pings my phone only if something's broken.
